Hi guys, I know they created a couple of bay window syncros as original proof of concept prototypes (of which I think only one has survived) for what was to become the T3 syncro only some years later.

Has anyone been involved in converting a Bay into a syncro? I'm thinking of restoring a 71 Bay from body up and fitting it with T3 syncro drive train and suspension (including Golf 2.0 motor as part of the conversion).

The body may need reinforcement, but as I'm planning on stripping the bus this would be the ideal opportunity to try it. I can also fund this as an experiment for someone who's more adept at this than me.

If no one has experience with this or does and believes its a no go I would like to understand any particular challenges, e.g. modifying steering to accommodate revised front axle, different suspension arrangement, possible modification to rear suspension (?), re-routing exhaust, getting the water-cooling conversion done in the T2 engine bay.

Actually watched the very same clip last night!

My idea was to create something that resembles those early prototypes...difference being that I'm starting off with a "low light" Bay (camper nogals) whereas these prototypes were "high light" ones. But the idea of an understated, yet capable Bay is very appealing.

I'm a little worried as a lot of information points to extensive chassis reinforcement being done on these prototypes. Maybe not a bad route as the basic vehicle is not heavy by modern standards. I'll take my own pictures of what I'm starting off with over the weekend so one can share the nasty detail. I'm worried that it's too vrot to even start with, but if not this one then maybe the right one is out there somewhere...

The thinking is worryingly resembling of any renovation work: if we're doing this, then we may as well...etc. No problems if budget were unlimited.

I worked on my Syncro for half the day today and only managed to fit new hand break cables so I take my hat off to you for giving this one a shot!
