syncro 50 degree inline 4 qusetions
Good day,

If I was to source a complete 1.8 volksie bus in order to do a conversion on a syncro, what do I need to keep in mind? what I know thus far.

The bellhousing on the volksiebus is the same as the old diesels with the starter up top, problem with that is the syncro fuel tank uses that space, so it would not work.
Overseas there were syncro diesel tanks which made provision for that, but I doubt we will get any here. If a 50degree adapter plate was used would the adapter plate act as a spacer and push the engine more rearwards making the engine not line with the carrier bar for the engine mountings to connect or can it just be forced to fit?
Do you get bell housings made for the 50 degree engine with the starter still in the original position?

Hi John
will answer below:
The bellhousing on the volksiebus is the same as the old diesels with the starter up top, problem with that is the syncro fuel tank uses that space, so it would not work. you can press a cavity into the syncro tank, but the 1800 uses a small flywheel and clucth, so i would stay away

If a 50degree adapter plate was used would the adapter plate act as a spacer and push the engine more rearwards making the engine not line with the carrier bar for the engine mountings to connect or can it just be forced to fit? adaptor is only 20mm thick, we have no hassles, we have done lots of these conversions

Do you get bell housings made for the 50 degree engine with the starter still in the original position? no, uses the adaptor and flywheel

I may be a mechanic, but i can't fix stupid
Bad planning on your part does not make your issue an crisis to me
Bad workmanship by other garages does not entiltle you to better rates at me
Syncro, syncro , syncro and more syncro, this is the syncro way of life

Thanks Stuart,
So in short if I was to get a complete volksiebus I can use everything and purchase a 50 adapterplate and I'm good to go and keep my original bell housing.
If I was to put an AGG engine in would the inlet manifold not touch the side of the engine bay and need cutting because they are pretty fat
